Hi all,

I am considering setting up a hosting company on a Caribbean island and was wondering if anyone could offer any advice - I have a great deal of experience managing dedicated servers remotely and a lot of experience with networking and PC hardware. I have a couple of questions however:

1) My ISP offers ADSL fairly cheap and also DIA (Dedicated Internet Access) which they say are "managed lease circuits" (I don't know what this means). I'm told that DIA is better but for a 512/Kbps DIA connection, the cost is about 30 times more than an ADSL connection of the same bandwidth. Is this reasonable?

2) I'm planning on purchasing a rack and 10 servers initially - probably Dell and UPS, backup generators, a KDU unit and obvious security fixings. Does anyone have any other advice?

Apologies for the very open nature of this post - hopefully I'll be able to be more specific once I know more!

Hi Bob

A managed lease circuit is usaully just a virtual VPN. Allowing you to assign multiple IP's and in some setups manage your peers.

Honestly, I would stay with 2 normal DSL connections, and have a backup wireless or other connection type if you want good redundancy.

Ensure security of your UPS gear - generators. In the islands I have friends with similar setups, ( fiji for example ). They had 5 people unbolt the generator and simply walk right past them with it. They had no power in the area.... Kinda sucked, it was a 10,000$ diesel gen :|

Thanks for the response and the advice - I think I've decided to start small and expand slowly (adding more servers as I learn more about whats possible).

I understand the issue with physical security but our location is very secure and crime is practically non-existant I'm happy to say!

Was curious what "DCs" are and if you know anything about the logistics of having multiple static IP addresses on one ADSL connection?
