HostGator.com is a big company but their care of their customers are not on the highest level. It leaves much to be desired.
As for A2hosting.com they provide technologies (PHP 5.2.4, MySQL 4.1.x, MySQL 5.0.x, PostgreSQL 8.2.x, Ruby on Rails 2.0) that are very useful in running your web site.
