It is all work on an configuration of a server, operating system and server applications. It is support not only availability of a server in a network, but also working capacity of all programs established on it. And many other things..
Its better to go with managed as of not having the knowledge of self managing factors. It will avoid your data loss, insecurity ect. If you do have knowledge about the management of the server issues then you can go with the unmanaged, as it reduces the cost.
But however even you go with the managed, make an analysis of the host you deal with.
If you feel that managed server is behind your budget, you can pay a smaller amount to the third party for management, at least for setting up Firewall. You don't have to install OS, it's usually done by default.

IMHO a managed server is always a better choice from a good and reliable host as once the payment has been done they take care of the rest and you don’t have to worry regarding the management of the server. It’s true that if it is a managed server it will cost more compared to the other but in the end it will be worth what you are paying for and you will sure not regret for the decision made.
