IMO... start with reseller plan, get familiar with the hosting selling business. find the customer group and keep them. once you have the group, move to own server, and you can start profit right the way.

a good way to start is by research. Research what users are actually looking for web hosting. One way to know is go to overture keywords tools to find out the number of keywords people search in particular phrase "web hosting"
the number actually tells you what kind of phrases that people type in the search box in this case yahoo search engine.
the higher the number the more people are looking for that phrase.

If you want to start one, don't rush to buy hosting since the price is cheap or best deal. Just do some plannings and design. When your design and site is ready then you can start find for hosting.
