virtual dedicated .. could be ... one single machine running 2 or 3 different server ( could also run different OS ) ...

very primary difference is dediacted server has both physical (entire server hardware) as well as logical (storage, RAM, devices, os) resources different

e.g. A and B are two separate physical servers on network

but Virtual dedicated has same physical but different logical resources.

e.g. A and B are on same phisical server but might be two diffrent on network

Just let you know that usually Virtual Dedicated know as VPS / VDS
Well Dedicated you have the server yourself, then VPS the server will be dividied usually use software like virtuozzo or other gpl.
VPs/ VDS is good if you want to learn about Dedicated, since you can share expenses to have managed dedicated or sometimes VDS/VPS is managed with quite good price
