Streaming plays video or audio files once the data is transferred to local machine via http. In downloading you will have to first download files in your local machine and then have to play them using a required software.

But streaming can be of different types as well, say serverpoint.com offer streaming via http server in their shared plans.

Choosing a host for streaming it's worth checking how many CPU he allows for on shared plans, as you may lose lots of clients at peak hours due to CPU limits.
