How to correctly estimate bandwidth requirements?

Hi

If someone has done some websites and decided to get into the hosting business as well,so many reseller plans out there and it seems that it has been made quite easy for us little entreprenours.

Everything is going fine, but I was wondering if anyone could give me tips on how to properly estimate bandwidth requirements for a website when offering hosting. I mean as a host you sell packages with limits to almost everything you give right, so how to correctly estimate bandwidth?

Does anyone have any rules of thumb or other advice that could be helpful.

Many thanks to anyone who responds and also to all of you in the community as these forums are really a great help.

Hi,
I'll give plans have b/w = diskspace allowed *(25~100) depending on
your plan options, and charge for extra $ for additional b/w required.
Why u want to estimate b/w for users? Isn't that the users will
determine how much they needed?

Hello,
if you mean packages in general i dont do a set rate, it goes about bw x10 of diskpace for the smaller packages and x15 for diskspace for bigger packages on average. Unless you mean estimate how much each client will use to oversell, if you mean this I do not recommend this unless you have another server ready if needed.

Once your business and traffic grows, you'll be in need of some extra disk space and bandwidth than you're presently using, So its better to get some extra space and bandwidth while signing up for a package in the start itself.

Like sudhanuj said, don't sweat it trying to estimate how much your clients might use. That's their responsibility. I do, however, agree with the above formulae; the BW should be somewhere around 10-25x the amount of disk space. The ratio would be lower for personal sites and higher for commercial sites.
