How important are the SSL certificates.
Do I need them even if my site does not do much e-commerece.

If ur site has any e-commerce you can't be without it. There are always people wanting totake ur money. If you jus have some ads. You don't need any of these. us check out apache-ssl.org.

if you are collecting payments via 3rd party gateway (like paypal , 2CO,...)
you really dont need SSL
the client enters his CC info under a secure ssl site (the payment gateway site)

but if you are collecting payment in your site and process the cc manually
you definetly need SSL

customers feel better when they see ssl. like my mom has no clue what an ssl is but heard it means the site is safe, even if she buys through 2checkout.com she still only buys from companys with ssl

SSL certificates are very very important whenever it comes to security issues to sites. A very small relation with e-commerce also will definately require SSL certificate. Customers feel secure ultimately get satisfaction by providing safe service that helps to rise business.
