 | shared hosting is where you get a peice of someone elses hosting package (you get hosting off a reseller) i am not too sure about VPS (virtual private servers) as i havent looked into them much, but i think they are a dedicated server devided between several people. and a dedicated server is basically you get your hosting straight from a computer.. (the server) and you are (i think) the only user for that computer this enables you to have a whole hd (they go up to about 160gig i think) and all the bandwidth that computer offers, but of course, this costs you more
thats what i know, and feel free to correct me if im wrong anyone |

 | firstly, its not a computer its a server:P. A vps is like rusty said a virtual private server, its basically a dedicated server split up. it can have root acces, minumum amount of memory etc just like a dedicated server. It can also create reseller accounts, these can create more accounts called shared accounts. Which is what most people use. |

 | An important thing I want to add is a VPS is limited by memory, and CPU. So, make sure you are running small sites on it only, or you will need to get more memory, CPU, or even upgrade to a real dedicated server.
VPS is good for someone to learn how to manage a server before getting a real one

 | is that because the memory is split between the separate VPS on the servers?
and also, if a vps seller quotes they offer 512mb ram, you'd only get a part of that? |

 | Yes, the real server will need an amount of memory and CPU to run the VPS administration software, then split the rest for VPSs. If the seller offer 512MB RAM, you get 512MB. Of course, you can still add swap memory like a real dedicated server. In VPS software likes Virtuozzo, you can see the whole CPU, like Dual Xeon or Dual Opteron, and all memory, likes 8GB RAM, but you cannot use it. You can just use what the seller sets
