When should I upgrade to vps or dedicated?

I am running a community forum using invision power board with coppermine gallery.

Currently it is just small community with max 15 members online at any one time.

So the question here:

1) How much can a shared hosting take in terms of max members online?

2) Any good vps host to intro? Prefer a affordable price around $20 per month.

3) Does vps space given include the os installed? Meaning do we need to install OS on the space given or there is already a OS there and we can just install application on the advertised free space.

Thanks.

Hi,

How much you can stay in a shared hosting environment depends on the hardware your host uses. Normally, a shared environment you can experience better speed as it is not allocated.

See it in a way that shared environment consider as "burstable" CPU speed. Of course some host does handle CPU usage by each account

If your host is decent, they will send you a notice if your site is using up too much resources. There are quite a few vps providers out there, but you may want to buy a cheap dedicated or semi dedicated server instead, as you will have access to alot more resources this way.

1) How much can a shared hosting take in terms of max members online?

Its not the hosting type thats going to bring up members to your board but just the popularity thats going to help you out.

2) Any good vps host to intro? Prefer a affordable price around $20 per month.

You can search and find a lot of hosts in the web host directories who'll be giving out an excellent hosting for $20. Also check out Our Internet, they're great for us thus far.

3) Does vps space given include the os installed? Meaning do we need to install OS on the space given or there is already a OS there and we can just install application on the advertised free space.

The VPS will be provided with the OS installed by the Web Host itself.

There are some very good advice in here already; I shall attempt to expand this a little further.'

If your budget is $20/month, you can expect pretty good packages with good support. For what you need, though, I don't think VPS or dedicated is necessary at the moment. 15 members isn't much and if your community is small like you say, then it may be a waste to upgrade at this moment.

Have you tried DreamHost? They offer plenty of space and 1TB of traffic for less than $10 per month. Their reliability and support could probably be improved, but since your community is small and it doesn't seem like it's a professional or commercial service, something like DreamHost could fit the bill.
